Christmas Card

Create background

assignment 2 - steps of making


1. Create a new A4 sized document
Hit Ctrl + N, select International Paper in the Preset, A4 in the Size, CMYK Color in Color Mode.
To rotate the background. Go to Image > Image Rotation > 90' CW

2. Fill color in the background
Go to Edit > Fill > Color > ff1b5d (pink)
Double click on the layer, select Pattern Overlay and choose a pattern with following info.

Blend Mode : Color Dodge
Opacity : 100 %
Scale : 100 %

3. Create a page divider
Create a new layer. Use Line Tool, press Shift and drag the cursor to create a line to separate the page into 2. Double click on the layer, select Stroke.

Size : 3 px
Position : Outside
Blend Mode : Normal
Opacity : 100 %
Color : 000000 (Black)


4. Create grungy area
Create a new layer. Select Rectangle Tool and make sure the foreground color is a73884 (Purple). Then, use Brush Tool to create grunge effect. Do not forget to change the brush direction or size by hitting F5 > Brush Tip Shape.


5. Clipping Mask Text
Use Horizontal Type Tool and start to type the words of "merry christmas".

Font : Lucida Handwriting
Size : 14 pt
Color : 230325 (Dark purple)

Select Ctrl + T to select all and start to rotate the text.
Next, hit Alt and click on the text in order to copy and paste to the other place in the rectangle area.
After that, go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask to create clipping mask text.


6. Create the box alike background.
Use Rectangle Tool with foreground color 000000 (Black) and draw a rectangle in the middle of the first page.
Continue with another rectangle. This time use Gradient > Foreground to Background
Color codes are b8589a and 562146.
Drag the cursor from top left to bottom right.
Whoala.

Next, go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise

Amount : 11 %
Distribution : Gaussian



7. Triangle tree
Create a new layer. Choose Polygonal Lasso Tool to create triangle shape in the middle of purple rectangle box. Right click and select Stroke.

Width : 5 px
Color : ffffff (White)


8. Tree decoration
Create a new layer. Select ffffff (white) as foreground color. Grab Brush Tool and start to brush the shape on the triangle tree. Remember to change the direction or size of brush by hitting F5 > Brush Tip Shape

After everything, you will get a tree like below the picture.



9. Blurring
Select back the layer of triangle tree. Fill it with white. Go to Edit > Fill > ffffff (white)
Deselect it by hitting Ctrl + D
Blur it by selecting Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur

Radius : 70 pixels


10. Ribbon on the tree

Go to File > Open
Copy the layer by hitting Ctrl + Alt + J
Use Magic Eraser Tool to erase the background.
Hit Ctrl + A to select all and hit Ctrl + C to copy


Go back to the File 1 and hit Ctrl + V to paste on the file.
Resize it by hitting Ctrl +T and double click on the layer .
Select Drop Shadow and Bevel and Emboss with Contour and Texture.


11. Tag
Foreground color as 0a260e (Green) and select Rectangle Tool to create a rectangle tag. Hit Ctrl + T to adjust the tag. Then, use Polygonal Lasso Tool to create two vertical small rectangle at each sides respectively. Followed by Line Tool to create lines along along the tag.
Double click on the layer, select Drop Shadow.

Blend Mode : Multiply
Opacity : 75 %
Angle : 175
Distance : 43 px
Spread : 36 %
Size : 46 %


12. Text
Use Horizontal Text Tool. Font is Lucida Handwriting and the font size is 24 pt. Double click on the layer and select Stroke.

Size : 13 px
Position : Outside
Blend Mode : Normal
Opacity : 100 %
Color : ffffff


13. Create ornament
Create a new document. Go to File > New > A4. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool and draw a circle. Right click and select Fill > Colour > ff1a5b

Use Polygonal Lasso Tool to create another one selection and fill it with the same color.

Use Brush Tool and start to create pattern on the Christmas ball.
The outcome as on the picture below.

Copy layer by hitting Ctrl + Alt + J. Use Magic Eraser Tool and remove the background. Then, use Eraser Tool to erase the extra pattern which out of the Christmas ball.

Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise

Amount : 11 %
Distribution : Uniform
Select Monochromatic


18.
Select the Christmas ball by hitting Ctrl + A and apply Filter > Distort > Spherize to make the ball volume.

Amount : 50 %
Mode : Normal


19.
Time to add glares. Use the Dodge Tool to create bright spot.

Brush : 100 px
Range : Highlights
Exposure : 50 %


20.
To add the dark glare, select the Burn Tool.

Brush : 100 px
Range : Shadows
Exposure : 20 %


21.
Create a new layer. Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to create round selection. Right click and select Fill > White

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Radius : 19.5 pixels

Done! I changed the color by adjusting the Levels. Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels

Select all by hitting Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C to copy, then Ctrl + V to paste on the tree.


25. Create a gingerman
Hit Ctrl + O to open the image, use Pen Tool to trace the image. Remember to create new layers for each of the tracing. After the tracing, right click and select Fill to fill the color that you desired.


26. Copy and paste
Using the same technique, Ctrl + A to select all, Ctrl + C to copy, Ctrl + V to paste on the main document.

27. Create half invisible image
Select the image. Hit Ctrl + Shift + U to make the image into black and white. Then, hit
f1-f10 to decide the level of invisible.



28. Create a frame
To create a frame, first, use Rectangle Tool and make sure the foreground color is white. Right click and select Stroke.

Size : 3 px
Position : Outside
Blend Mode : Normal
Opacity : 100 %
Color : 000000

Use Eraser Tool to erase the middle part of white area.
Next, select Brush Tool and start to brush the pattern in the frame. Remember to change the direction and size of the brush. There are two types of brush color. ffffff (White) and bf1f2c (Maroon).


29. Create the image of Santa Claus
Hit Ctrl + O to open the image and use Pen Tool to trace the image. Do not forget to create new layer every time you trace a part. Right click and select Fill to fill with color as well.
After the tracing, I've got the image as below.



30. Copy and paste
Hit Ctrl + A to select all, Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste on the main document.
Next, double click on the layer and select Outer Glow.

Blend Mode : Screen
Opacity : 75 %


31. Text
Use Horizontal Text Tool to create text. Select Birch Std as font and the size is 60 pt. The text color is 90eb89 ( Light green).
Adjust the text by hitting Ctrl + T.
Double click on the text layer and select Stroke.

Size : 18 px
Position : Outside
Blend Mode : Normal
Opacity : 100 %
Color : 042807


32. Content
Use Horizontal Text Tool to create text with foreground color- ffffff (White). Font is Birch Std with the font size, 19.75 pt.
Double click on the text layer and select Stroke.

Size : 3 px
Position : Outside
Blend Mode : Normal
Opacity : 100 %
Color : 000000


33. Frame
Use Custom Shape Tool and select the shape like the picture above. Make sure the foreground color is 3a0813.
Right click to select Flip Horizontally. Hit Ctrl + T to adjust the shape and place it below the text.


34. Done
